Attention Sophomores interested in attending The Craft Academy
Craft Academy and Gatton Academy Class of 2023 admission deadline extended
The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics and The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science announced on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020, their coordinated admissions deadlines will be extended from Feb. 1, 2021 to March 1, 2021.
The programs are taking steps to support prospective students in applying for admissions to the academies despite the current pandemic. In addition to extending the deadline, these measures include offering special administrations of the ACT at the academies’ host campuses of Morehead State University (Craft Academy) and Western Kentucky University (Gatton Academy). Known as ACT OnCampus (formerly known as the ACT Residual Test), these special testing dates provide prospective students the opportunity to take the ACT exam outside of a national test administration and are less likely to be cancelled or rescheduled. For more information on registering for the ACT OnCampus, prospective students should email the Craft Academy at craftacademy@moreheadstate.edu or the Gatton Academy at academy@wku.edu.
Extending the admissions deadline allows prospective students more time to request letters of recommendation, request official transcripts, and complete required essays. It also gives prospective students who do not take the ACT OnCampus one last national ACT administration on Feb. 6. Note students may not take the ACT OnCampus and test on Feb. 6.
Offering ACT OnCampus opportunities and extending the admissions deadline maintain the admissions standards of the Craft Academy and The Gatton Academy while addressing some of the barriers prospective students have faced in this unprecedented time. Both academies are looking forward to next fall with full residence halls and in-person classes.

For our students attending CCATC, concerning in-person classes tomorrow:
CCATC will be following suit with some of our partner districts tomorrow, and all in-person classes will be moved to virtual learning. Students, please remember, if your teacher is holding a Google Meet you are required to attend. Also, don't forget that you are responsible for completing any and all work that is assigned. Everyone stay safe, and we'll see you soon!

‘Twas the week before break, and all through the land,
Students were busy, making their plans.
Assignments completed, Google Meets done,
Checking their lists to get ready for fun!
One simple box, that’s easy to check –
Graduation requirement – the Civics Test!
So come on students, let’s get it done,
So you can embark on your holiday fun!!

Rudolph had a big party and all the reindeer have had to quarantine! (Whatever happened to not allowing him to join in any reindeer games)?!! Stay calm. We have it on good authority that they will be good to go by Christmas Eve. In the meantime, Santa has enlisted some extra help to spread early Christmas cheer. Be on the lookout Thursday between 11:30 and 3:00. It won’t be Santa’s sleigh, but something is definitely on the way!

Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors:
Don't forget to take your Civics Test. The study guide and directions are on the Trimble County Jr/Sr High Google Classroom. This test is required to graduate!
Also, Seniors, an email was sent out last week about the Civics Test and for some the KYOTE. Contact Ms. Howerton if you have questions. 502-255-7781 or email andrea.howerton@trimble.kyschools.us

Parents and Students,
Amid remote learning, we are finding that many students are attempting the same focus area within minutes, when they do not successfully pass it, and are making multiple attempts without any direct teacher support or reinforcement strategies. This does not allow students time to work through any resources or tools that might support them in better understanding the material, nor does it provide teachers adequate time to look at what the student may be struggling to understand, in order to provide additional support.
To better support students and teachers, we ask that the following norms from in-person learning be adhered to during remote learning:
• Allow 30 minutes between attempts for the same focus area. This allows the student time to review class resources, materials, and notes, which will assist them in being successful on the next attempt
• Do not attempt the same focus area more than twice per day, unless you have been in contact with the teacher (email, phone, or Google Meet) to discuss what you are struggling with and obtain teacher support.
• If you have not successfully passed the focus area after four attempts, make direct contact with your teacher – they can help!
We want students to be successful with their coursework and the opportunity to support them in that process. Please help us help you, by following these norms.

Attention Juniors, Full Ride Scholarship Opportunity
We write to share a major scholarship opportunity, the Coolidge Scholarship. "The Coolidge" is among America's most generous: a full-ride scholarship that covers a student's tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. Unlike other top scholarships, the Coolidge can be used by recipients at any accredited U.S. college or university. More information, including the application, is available at coolidgescholars.org.
Any high school junior who plans to enroll in college in the fall of 2022 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident is eligible to apply (current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). All applications must be completed online and submitted by 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, Wednesday, January 20, 2021.
Coolidge Scholars are selected based primarily on academic excellence. Secondary criteria include: an interest in public policy, an appreciation for the values President Coolidge championed, as well as humility and service. Today's competitive academic culture regrettably sometimes drives students to hype their accomplishments and pursue ambitious efforts merely to attain credentials. The Coolidge Scholarship pushes back on this trend. Successful candidates are indeed accomplished, but exhibit humility with respect to their achievements and pursue things of genuine interest to them regardless of the perceived prestige associated with the activity. A complete description of the scholarship's criteria is available at www.coolidgescholars.org/selection-criteria.
The scholarship program is administered by the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, the official foundation dedicated to America's thirtieth president. The competition for the scholarship is indeed significant. Yet even students who do not win have told us they are glad they went through the application process because it helped prepare them for college applications later on. Furthermore, the Coolidge Foundation invites 100 of the top applicants to participate in its Coolidge Senators Program, which includes an all-expenses-paid Summit Weekend in Washington, D.C. and a one-time $1,000 scholarship. Applicants who make it to the finalist level, but do not ultimately win the full scholarship, also receive a modest one-time finalist scholarship.
Alert: the application requires that applicants read President Coolidge's Autobiography and complete a few other reading assignments. While the book is not overly long, we encourage applicants to begin the application early so that they have plenty of time. Candidates who begin the application at the last minute are unlikely to be successful.
